SUMMARY:Beatrice Zani - Who Catches the Fish? Migrant Labor and the Hidden Worlds of Global Seafood
DESCRIPTION:Organized by and co-sponsored with UCSB East Asia Center \nCurrently a visiting scholar at the Institute of Sociology of Academia Sinica\, Beatrice Zani ((French National Center for Scientific Research) examines transnational labor in the Asian fishing and shipping sectors\, including the links between labor and commodity mobilities\, global work and supply chains\, and informality and digitality. \nDrawing on more than four years of multi-sited ethnographic research in Taiwan\, Indonesia\, and Singapore\, I argue that the distant-water fishing industry operates through an oceanic labor regime in which the sea actively shapes work\, mobility\, and everyday life.
